From a Single Spark to a Lasting Legacy: The History of Apostolic Carmel High School, Bandra

The story of Apostolic Carmel High School & Junior College is a journey of faith, vision, and commitment to empowering young women.

Global Roots and Divine Inspiration

The school's legacy dates back to July 16, 1868, when Venerable Mother Veronica founded the Congregation of the Apostolic Carmel in Bayonne, France, to dedicate herself to the education of young girls. By 1870, the first group of sisters arrived in India, establishing their first convent in Mangalore. Over 154 years later, the congregation has expanded globally, running colleges, schools, and social welfare centers across multiple countries.

The Seed is Sown in Bandra (1953)

The Bandra chapter began when Valerian Cardinal Gracias (Archbishop of Bombay) and Sr. Theodosia A.C. envisioned an independent girls' school to replace the girls' section of St. Andrew’s High School. The property and building were acquired from the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Henry Remedios. On May 20, 1953, four pioneer sisters— Mother Celine, Sr. Aimee, Sr. Aloysie, and Sr. Mafalda—traveled by steamer from Mangalore to Mumbai. The school officially opened in June 1953 with 6 classes and 625 students.

Foundation and Growth (1953–1970s)

  • 1955: Construction began on a new block of 6 classrooms, which still serves as the Primary Section today.
  • 1956: The school was recognized as an independent, English-medium girls' school, and its first batch of 24 students appeared for the Board Exams.
  • 1957: The school building was extended, and a new chapel—the heart of the Carmel community—was blessed.
  • 1962 & 1971: High school classes shifted to a new block, and a new floor was added above the hall to create the iconic library space.
  • 1974: Under the leadership of Principal Sr. Maria Rosa, the Higher Secondary Section was opened.

Affiliation, Development, and Legacy Today

Despite early policy and language challenges, the school successfully affiliated with the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE). To keep up with growing admissions, infrastructure steadily expanded to include a Chemistry Laboratory, a Home Science section, and the school's first Computer Lab under Sr. Theodomira.

Guided by their Patroness, Mary, Queen of Carmel, and the school motto, "GOD IS MY STRENGTH," the institution heavily emphasizes both holistic spiritual values and sports excellence.

Today, located on Hill Road, Bandra West, it stands as a premier girls' institution from Nursery to 12th grade, offering specialized Junior College streams in Science, Commerce, and Arts.
